Dean Mark P. Taylor and Richard J. Mahoney cordially invite you to attend the

Fall 2019 Business Research Series: The Passive Effect on Activism

Using filings from more than 1,000 firms over seven years, WashU Olin’s Todd Gormley investigated the role passive investment plays in a firm’s future when activist investors push for change. The result: The higher the share of passive investor ownership, the more positive the effect as other investors push for changes in board membership, hostile proxy fights or even the sale of the firm. The results come in Gormley’s paper “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: The Effect of Passive Investors on Activism” in The Review of Financial Studies, written with Ian Appel of Boston College and Donald Keim of the University of Pennsylvania.
