When you launch your web browser for some online shopping, how do web-based retailers know which products you’ll find most irresistible? How do they recommend products that will maximize revenue from the billions of shoppers who pass through their virtual doors? Those questions form the crux of Olin Award-winning research by WashU’s Dennis Zhang and Jake Feldman. Their research—with Chinese online retail giant Alibaba—tested the limits of machine learning technology, leavening it with customer-choice methodologies from a half-century ago.
